This joint honours programme provides an equal-depth exploration of the history of art and the history of music. In the history of art, students will examine artworks from various periods and cultures, learning about their creation, broader visual and material contexts, and evolving interpretations. In Years 3 and 4, opportunities include specialising in specific areas, conducting independent research, developing a dissertation, and studying abroad. For the history of music, the programme covers a wide range of music through aesthetic, cultural, social, and political contexts, addressing issues in the production and reception of popular and Western art music. In later years, students can select diverse options and write a dissertation on a music-related topic. Both fields complement each other through shared ideas, movements, methodologies, and historical contexts.
