Criminology, Bachelor

La Trobe’s Bachelor of Criminology equips students to develop innovative solutions to social issues and contribute to safer communities. The program examines crime within its broader social context, exploring how gender, race, power and economic factors shape responses to offending. Students investigate the causes of crime, principles of prevention and policy, and the intersection of social factors with the criminal justice system. They also examine the roles of courts, police and prisons, and analyse the Australian legal system in its historical, ethical, economic and social context. International crimes such as genocide are studied alongside domestic offences. Practical experience is available through electives in case management or industry internships, including placements at organisations such as the Victims of Crime Tribunal. Flexible study options—online, on campus or blended—are offered, and graduates may receive credit toward La Trobe’s Bachelor of Laws (Honours) or double law degrees. The qualification is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework as Level 7 – Bachelor Degree.
