About the course

Our 4-year BA in Modern Chinese, offered through a partnership between Cardiff University and Beijing Normal University, equips students with advanced Mandarin language skills, deep cultural insights, and knowledge of China's social, political, historical, and cultural contexts. The programme fosters translation abilities, professional experience, and high-level communication and critical thinking. A key component involves spending two years in Beijing at Beijing Normal University, immersing in the language and culture while learning from native experts, which builds resilience and independence. Two pathways cater to different proficiency levels: Upper Elementary for those with A-level or equivalent Mandarin knowledge, and Elementary for beginners.Upon completion, graduates will be fluent and accurate in Mandarin, capable of analysing complex texts in both Chinese and English. The curriculum integrates language with culture and society, emphasising diversity and mobility to cultivate global citizens with transferable skills. Distinctive features include a dual degree, immersive experiences, professional opportunities, dynamic teaching with technology, structured skills development, and vibrant extracurricular activities, all aimed at enhancing employability and cultural understanding.
