About the course

Civil engineers design, build, and maintain essential infrastructure such as buildings, roads, railways, bridges, and water systems that underpin daily life. This accredited programme equips students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to become competent civil engineers. Through laboratory sessions, field trips, individual projects, and design classes, participants apply theoretical learning to real-world problems, enhancing abilities in surveying and design. Students engage in authentic engineering scenarios, both individually and in multidisciplinary groups, fostering teamwork, communication, and collaboration in an open-access makerspace. Opportunities include paid placements in locations worldwide, such as with firms like Arup and Mott MacDonald, allowing application of skills in professional settings. The MEng pathway offers advanced study in design, management, and multidisciplinary projects.Key features include a year-long industrial placement for hands-on experience in the UK or abroad, professional accreditation by institutions like the Institution of Civil Engineers, which fulfills academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer status and partially for Chartered Engineer. The curriculum, shaped by industry input and delivered by experienced academics, emphasizes design through practical work in specialized facilities. This MEng programme provides a faster route to Chartered Engineer status compared to the BEng.
