About the course

Our BA (Hons) in English and Creative Writing equips you with a rigorous creative writing practice alongside strong critical and analytical skills. You will enhance your writing, close-reading, and research abilities, learning to produce diverse original works such as critical arguments, fiction, audio drama, screenplays, short stories, and poetry. Taught by esteemed academics and practitioners in the School of English, the course offers a wide array of modules covering literature from various periods, movements, and genres. This flexible program allows you to customize your studies to align with your personal interests and global career goals. The course integrates literary analysis—fostering critical thinking about published works—with hands-on development of your writing craft across genres like poetry, prose fiction, and drama. You will build expertise in key elements such as setting, structure, dialogue, character development, and poetic techniques. An optional professional placement year, taken after your second year, provides real-world experience with employers, supported by the university's extensive networks. Note that placement fees equate to 20% of the full-time course fee, and alongside creative writing, you will engage in English modules to refine research and analytical skills.
