The first two years of the programme deliver a comprehensive foundation in biomedical science, including detailed insights into viruses and the diseases they cause. Students explore the immune system's role in controlling infections and examine autoimmune disorders that arise when it mistakenly targets the body's own tissues. In the final year, participants analyse major viral diseases of humanity, covering aspects such as natural history, biology, molecular biology, immunology, pathogenesis, and epidemiology, with examples including HIV, hepatitis B and C, papilloma, influenza, measles, and coronaviruses. The curriculum addresses advanced topics in virology and immunology, such as emerging viruses like SARS-CoV-2, Marburg, and Ebola, alongside challenges in vaccine production. Students typically undertake a research project in virology or immunology. Additionally, a four-year BSc option with industry placement is available via transfer after the second year.
