Medical Social Worker
Medical Social workers assist patients and elderly to overcome any emotional, social or financial difficulties that arises from their illness or old age. They assess the mental, physical and financial situation of the patient and his family, and provide the appropriate counselling and care to these patients so that they can better cope with these difficulties.
For example, a patient who has just lost a limb due to amputation may be suffering from depression, or may find difficulty paying the medical bills. As a breadwinner, he may also be worried about his family's future finances. A Medical Social Worker can provide counselling to improve the mental state of the patient or refer him to a psychologist. The patient can be directed to the appropriate government organisation or welfare bodies for financial assistance. The Medical Social Worker can also help the patient and family members settle into their new lifestyle and routine, so that they can re-integrate into the society.
Medical social workers also work with other healthcare professionals to improve the physical and psychological treatment plans for patients, and promote shared responsibility among medical professionals towards patient care. In so doing, they help to achieve the best system of care for patients.
This is a profession of growing importance in our country, especially as we meet the challenges of an ageing population. If you have the compassion and commitment to aid the elderly and disabled, and have the ability to assist patients and their families in distress, join the healthcare industry as a medical social worker.
