About Marine Scientists

Marine scientists are involved in analytical research and forecasting of a nature that pertains to the oceans, their organisms and other interlinked water bodies. They analyse the ocean and the manner in which it interacts with land masses to make predictions which can encompass other aspects of the environment and extend to climate influence.

A common misconception many members of the public seem to have regarding the field of Marine Sciences is that Marine Scientists spend most of their time frolicking on vessels watching dolphins and whales swim by. In reality, the job can take on a much more mundane nature - plenty of lab-work, analysis of chemical substances; all based on the fact that the ocean is so vast and complex that much of it is still unknown, especially at the microscopic level.

Marine Scientists contribute significantly to society with their research on the oceans. Humans are inextricably linked to and dependent on many resources which originate from the sea. To illustrate that point, 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by ocean, 70% of the protein consumed by humans is from marine ecosystem and a host of non-marine natural processes continue to be affected by the health of the oceans.

If you’re passionate about marine science are proficient in subjects such as biology, chemistry and geography, go for a job in this sector!
