What is GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) status?

Australia immigration wants to ensure that all students come with the intention to study. Students who are potential drop-outs or who enter Australis with the intention to seek full-time work, permanent residence or asylum are not welcomed.

You will be assessed during your visa application. If you meet the requirements and are deemed as a "genuine" student, you will be issued the GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) status along with your student visa.

What will I be assessed for GTE?

The Australia immigration will assess the following:
  • circumstances in the applicant’s home country
  • the applicant’s potential circumstances in Australia
  • the applicant’s immigration history
  • the value of the course to the applicant’s future
  • any other matter relevant to the applicant’s intention to stay temporarily.
More specifically, the Australia immigration will look at your:
  • English language proficiency
  • Financial capacity
  • Prerequisite schooling
  • Age
  • Immigration history
  • Intention to comply with visa conditions

How do I know if I will qualify for GTE status?

If you are a genuine student, chances are that you will have the necessary documents and evidences to satisfy the requirements.

Conversely, if your main intention of going to Australia is not to study (and you probably know who you are), chances are that you will not meet the requirement and that your visa will be rejected!
