About the course

This four-year course, offered in partnership with the School of East Asian Studies, integrates intensive Japanese language training from beginner level with modules on Japan and East Asia. It combines this with linguistics studies, equipping students with essential analytical tools to explore how languages function, are processed in the mind, and influence society. Students will develop skills to critically examine Japanese language, culture, politics, and history, including mastering phonetic scripts (Kana), 2,000 Sino-Japanese characters (Kanji), and spending a year at a Japanese university. The program also incorporates digital tools for language analysis and data handling. Why pursue this course? It fosters global linguistic expertise on one of the UK's longest-running Japanese programs, backed by over 60 years of excellence and award-winning faculty. Ranked 4th in the UK for linguistics (The Complete University Guide 2023) and 1st in Asian studies (NSS 2023), it prepares students to become leaders by deeply engaging with Japan's dynamic society, supported by top-tier teaching and career guidance.
