Geologist
The work conducted by geologists revolves around analysing the Earth’s geological processes and understanding the history of the planet to better shed light upon how geological events of the past might exert influence on the present and future.
Essentially, geologists tend to focus their research, analysis and forecasting on three areas - earth materials, earth processes and earth history.
The degree of reliance humans have on natural resources is so great that there is a danger of depletion to an extent which would not only affect the planet’s equilibrium but also endanger human survival. Geologists spend much of their career examining and testing natural resources such oil, gas, metals, water and rocks to determine the health of the planet and aid in devising more effective and efficient alternatives to the use of these materials.
In terms of earth processes - such as floods, hurricanes and tectonic plate movement - the main reason geologists focus so much on this area is to generate trend analysis reports to more accurately forecast possible future occurrences of destructive earth processes. This information is useful in making sure important structures do not get built in disaster-prone regions and to help develop better disaster management technology and strategies.
Earth history is no less important - geologists study phenomenon such as climate cycles and past climates conditions to gain insight on the rising temperatures which have left people the world over highly concerned.
Geologists are hired to work in a myriad of settings. These include universities, environmental consulting agencies, natural resource companies, non-profit organisations.
While you might spend a considerable amount of time in offices and laboratories conducting experiments, doing calculations and writing reports, prepare to be involved in some fieldwork throughout the course of your career.
So, if you’re interested in all things Planet Earth, you may find yourself gravitating towards Geology as a career.
